  • May 18, 2018 (Friday) at OSF Healthcare JUMP Simulation Center - Peoria, IL. Register Now

Workshop Information

The Society of Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) and the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL) will host one-day Simulation Regional Workshop on the guidelines of the NCSBN National Simulation Study. The Study concluded that up to 50% of simulation could be effectively substituted for traditional clinical experiences under certain conditions for Prelicensure nursing students.

The workshop will explore:

  • Creating a dialog around simulation guidelines and local regulation by the Boards of Nursing.
  • Utilizing the NCSBN Simulation Guidelines for Prelicensure Nursing Programs within individual simulation programs.
  • Applying the INACSL Standards of Best Practice: Simulation within the development, implementation and assessment of simulation based education.
  • Using the SSH Accreditation Standards to advance the simulation program.
  • Understanding the benefits of SSH certification (CSHE, CHSE-A, CHSOS) as a developmental pathway for simulation instructors.
  • The benefits of membership in INACSL and SSH.

The workshop also includes review of the study, results and subsequent guidelines for local and national implications.  In addition, local simulation leaders will review the simulation standards and resources available to assist schools and/or organizations as they advance simulation in a changing regulatory environment.

Suzie Kardong-Edgren is a professor and Director of the RISE Center at Robert Morris University, Moon Township, PA. Dr. Edgren is a national and internationally known educational researcher, author, consultant, and the Editor-in-Chief Emeritus of Clinical Simulation in Nursing, the flagship journal for the International Nursing Association of Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL). She served as the VP of Research for the INACSL. Dr. Edgren was awarded the Excellence in Educational Research award by the National League for Nursing (NLN) in 2012 and the prestigious Debra Spunt Endowed Lectureship in simulation by the NLN in 2010.

Donna S. McDermott, PhD, MSN, RN, CHSE
Donna McDermott is the department head and assistant professor in the School of Nursing and Health Sciences at Robert Morris University and is certified through the Society for Simulation in Healthcare (SSH) as a Certified Healthcare Simulation Educator (CHSE) and is a member of the International Nursing Association for Clinical Simulation and Learning (INACSL). She is experienced in simulation design and facilitation and her area of research interest is simulation prebriefing. Her published research, The Prebriefing Concept: A Delphi Study of CHSE Educators (McDermott, 2016) provided guidelines for preparing students for simulation learning. She has developed and initiated simulation scenarios across the curriculum in undergraduate psychiatric care of clients, undergraduate community/hospice care, and nuclear medicine ECG and IV training using INACSL Standards of Best Practice: SimulationSM. She has facilitated and debriefed simulation scenarios in all areas of undergraduate and graduate nursing. In addition, she initiated the Standardized Patient program at RMU and was instrumental in the RISE Center accreditation. Donna is currently a member of the INACSL Standards committee helping to revise and develop content for the INACSL Standards of Best Practice: SimulationSM. In addition, Donna serves as a Nurse Planner for INACSL and as a reviewer for the Clinical Simulation in Nursing journal.
